# Skwir > Skwir is a free, open-source file manager for humans and agents. Preview documents, photos, videos, music and archives instantly, search and tag your files, switch between list, grid, board, disk-usage and map views, and undo your changes. Scripts and AI agents run the same commands, and what an agent would change waits for your review as a plan. The first Linux release is coming soon, with macOS and Windows on the way. Scripts run its commands with skwir cmd, agents with skwir mcp. The interactive windows on the site use synthetic sample files. Repository: https://github.com/skwir-org/skwir Licence: Apache-2.0 ## Pages - [Home](https://skwir.org/): what Skwir is, with a live sample window, and Skwir for agents in short - [Features](https://skwir.org/features): every feature in detail, from previews and views to search, organising and undo - [Download](https://skwir.org/download): packages for Linux distributions; macOS and Windows are planned - [For agents](https://skwir.org/agents.md): the command line and the MCP server that drive the open window, what an agent may do, plans and private folders (Markdown of https://skwir.org/docs/scripts-and-agents; in short at https://skwir.org/#agents) - [Documentation](https://skwir.org/docs): the user guide, the release notes and the documents for contributors ## Getting started - [Getting started](https://skwir.org/docs/getting-started): Install Skwir, take your first steps, and learn what each part of the window does. ## Using Skwir - [Browsing and views](https://skwir.org/docs/browsing-and-views): Move around your folders, open tabs and a second pane, and pick the view that suits what you’re looking at. - [Previews](https://skwir.org/docs/previews): Select a file and Skwir shows what’s inside it, beside the list, without opening another app. Here is what each kind of file can do, and what it needs. - [Searching](https://skwir.org/docs/searching): A search in Skwir is a place: come back to it, open it in a tab, keep it in the sidebar. Here is what you can ask for, and how to narrow what it finds. - [Tags, ratings and comments](https://skwir.org/docs/tags-ratings-and-comments): Give any file tags, a rating and a comment. Skwir keeps them on the files, where your other applications read them too. - [Organising files](https://skwir.org/docs/organising-files): Copy, move, rename and delete files, gather them on the Shelf, and use Undo. Changes to many files come as a plan you review first. ## Customising - [Settings](https://skwir.org/docs/settings): Settings apply as you change them. Here is what each page sets, how plugins work, which folders stay private, and where Skwir keeps things. - [Keyboard shortcuts](https://skwir.org/docs/keyboard-shortcuts): Almost everything in Skwir has a shortcut. These are the defaults; you can change any of them. - [Scripts and agents](https://skwir.org/docs/scripts-and-agents): Everything Skwir does is a named command, and scripts and AI agents can run the same commands in your open window. What they would change comes to you as a plan, and nothing runs until you apply it. ## Reference - [Troubleshooting](https://skwir.org/docs/troubleshooting): What to do when Skwir doesn’t start or a preview is missing, and how to report a problem. - [Release notes](https://skwir.org/docs/release-notes): What changed in each version of Skwir, newest first. ## For contributors - [Contributing](https://skwir.org/docs/contributing): Report a problem, build Skwir and check a change, and find the rules the code follows. - [Writing a plugin](https://skwir.org/docs/writing-a-plugin): Add fields, thumbnails, previews and commands to Skwir, as a WebAssembly module or a program, starting from the template. - [The plugin protocol](https://skwir.org/docs/plugin-protocol): What Skwir and a plugin from outside say to each other: the manifest, the messages and their limits. Experimental in 0.1. - [Helping with macOS and Windows](https://skwir.org/docs/help-wanted): The macOS and Windows code compiles but has never run. With a Mac or a Windows machine, you can help, step by step. - [Security](https://skwir.org/docs/security): What counts as a security problem in Skwir, and how to report one privately.
